  • Ancient Americans magazine...

Picked up a copy the other day. What are your thoughts on this publication? Just kind of skimmed through it. It looks like some good reading. Big article about the supposed prehistoric giants. Might subscribe but I wanted to get a few opinions first.

It's basically crackpot history. Here's a little bit about the editor of that publication:

They also backed the discoveries from Burrows Cave, Illinois. An outlandish hoax.....

Same guy, going by a different name:

As noted, the magazine promoted the Burrows Cave discoveries, which were truly laughable. Just a ridiculous hoax. The magazine may have entertainment value, so long as one does not take it seriously. It's pretty much all BS......

Burrows Cave, and some of the "artifacts" found there, which Joseph promoted in the pages of his magazine Ancient American:

Is there any kind of good monthly publication on the subject that you would recommend?

If the subject is "alternative history ", no, I don't know of any such publications.

Something on the ancients of North America. Is there anything good out there?

Charlie’s dead right about the “Ancient American” magazine, although I don’t think Frank Collin edits it any more. It is nevertheless still full of delusional crackpottery.

If you need something which is factual and authoritative and you need it to be exclusively and specifically about North America, you only have one option that I’m aware of… but it ain’t cheap.

The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) publishes a quarterly journal devoted to the archaeology of the New World titled “American Antiquity”. The journal (paper and/or digital) comes as part of the society membership benefits which currently costs $155 annually, unless you qualify for a discount (student or senior). Full details on their website here:

            https://ecommerce.saa.org/saa/source/members/signpay1.cfm

There is also a sister journal covering Latin America for an additional $60 and an option to access back-issues of both journals (60+ years of them) digitally via JSTOR for $25 annually.

Like I said, it ain’t cheap. Other than that you may do better to broaden your interests via a less expensive magazine with a worldwide coverage that includes American-related features from time to time. The one I used to subscribe to was “Minerva”, which is bi-monthly. There are several decent alternatives, but I found it to be very readable and well-illustrated. Website is here:

            http://www.minervamagazine.co.uk/

What I tend to do now, rather than subscribe, is go to a large newsagents where I know the magazine is stocked and have a quick flick through. I then only buy it if there is something of interest. You may not readily find this particular magazine in America but the current issue for example has a feature on rock art in New Mexico.

[PS: I will shortly move this thread to the "Suggested Reading" section of the forum].

I keep six honest serving-men (they taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.

                You're welcome.

If you have any interest in "Minerva", the website lists Barnes & Noble as the main stockist in various parts of America.

              There is also Archaeology Magazine:

Of course, it too will not be exclusively NA archaeology.
