WYANDOTTE CHERT, ( Indiana, Kentucky )

Wyandotte chert is a high-quality material with excellent knappability for which the principal outcrop is in Indiana: Harrison and Crawford counties, Kentucky: Meade, Breckinridge and Hardin counties.. Typically grey to blue-grey and from very light to very dark grey. It can be found with concentric eyes (bullseye) and can patinate from tan to brown. Has a fine texture and is slight to very waxy. It also frequently contains small fossiliferous cavities lined or filled with iron oxides or other minerals. It’s also renowned for its occurrence as large “cannonball” nodules in stream beds, ranging from golf ball to soccer ball size. It was highly prized in prehistoric times and widely traded, as far west as Kansas City, Missouri; as far east as DelMarva area on the Chesapeake Bay; as far north as Ontario; and south into Alabama and Georgia. During the terminal late Archaic, specifically the Glacial Kame, Red Ochre, Meadowood and other cultures...virtually 100% of all Turkeytails were made from this chert. [DeRegnaucourt & Georgiady]
It was particularly popular during the late Archaic and early and middle Woodland periods [Cantin 1994]. It was not typically heat treated for knapping [Tankersley 1984].
