Glacial Kame Culture (Ontario, Michigan, Ohio & Indiana)

The Glacial Kame was a culture of Archaic people that occupied southern Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana from around 8000 BC to 1000 BC. The name derives from a habit of burying the dead at the top of glacially-deposited hills of gravel. The type site is the Ridgeway Site near the village of Ridgeway in Hardin County, Ohio.
Occupation sites frequently yield few or no projectile points and those that are found are of diverse types, suggesting that the point styles were developed independently by small groups of people. Most sites are typified by marine shells and items made from them, plus items manufactured from copper. Until recent discoveries of basic pottery at the Zimmerman site in Ohio, they were believed to have no tradition for ceramics.
