A Bone Harpoon from the Jack's Reef Site (New York)

The Jack's Reef site is a Middle Woodland site dating to the Kipp Island Phase(c. 310-630 A.D.) of the Point Peninsula Tradition. Jack's Reef Corner Notch and Jack's Reef Pentagonal are the diagnostic point styles of the Kipp Island phase. The Jack's Reef site, where the point types were first excavated in context and named, is located on a bend in the Seneca River in Seneca, NY, and was a large fishing camp of the Kipp Island Phase. There are many shell middens located at the site. In 1938-1939, Mr. and Mrs. K. O. Palmer dug middens and recovered a great many bone and antler tools, including the bone harpoon tip seen here. The Jack's Reef Site is well known for the large number of harpoons and harpoon fragments. This is a well preserved tip with polish.....
