I grew up in CT in an area called the Valley. In Derby which was the smallest of the valley town there is a solid Historical Society run by a dedicated group of concerned citizens. They have done so much and they share membership among the valley towns. Shelton, Derby Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Seymour and Oxford CT Recently a terrible thing happened in Derby. Here are an article and a Youtube Video documenting the destruction. SOme of my fondest childhood memories are of riding inn the back of Pop's station wagon on this street. I reaally hate to see this video it tears me apart inside. http://www.wfsb.com/story/33093426/d...afety-concerns

You Guy's getting a supercenter? We have some old street's like that down the road in crystal city mo. Car's tire's make kind of a "brap" sound and car vibrates just a little, heh. Actually really like those old town street's myself too. Guess they have some kind of reason. Would be cool to have a driveway like that. What bugs me is a lot of the places i used to eat at are gone. Cheer up Hoss.

You hate to see history trashed for progress. That cobblestone road has probably been there for 100 years and didn't need patching and repairing like you see on a regular basis with concrete and asphalt.
At the Chicago Stockyards, at one time the biggest in the world, the streets were paved with granite cobbles that all have a bevel to them. They were used as ships ballast before becoming pavers and were supposedly from Europe. Somebody in my county had thousands of them hauled here to be used for a driveway but never did. I came across them when we built our house and hauled a few hundred here and used them for our front walk. Pretty cool to save some of that history and have it outside my front door.

We still have 18th century cobblestone streets in Providence and Newport, maybe elsewhere. Here is Thames St. in Newport. Unfortunately, we also have the 49th ranked worse roads in the union. Many of the streets in my city looked like they were bombed. And I'm serious. The number one reason I would ever tell someone why they should not move to RI is our roads. Much more suitable for horseback then horseless carriages!!

Hey Matt, It is a shame to see the cobblestone go. On a different track here: Just a few years ago the little town of Gladstone installed a new cobblestone street at the main intersection.

There are histroic homes on the street they are taking them away from. Only one house on that section they could have closed the road and saved this. There was never much traffic on the street. A stone mason had lived in the vicinity and he had built some magnificent homes in the area. The Historical Societies normally get funds and protect this stuff but they might have too much going on. Ahhh such is life another piece of history destroyed in the name of progress. Greg it is very cool that you saved some of those stones.
