  • Destruction of California Site

"A treasure trove of Coast Miwok life dating back 4,500 years - older than King Tut's tomb - was discovered in Marin County and then destroyed to make way for multimillion-dollar homes, archaeologists told The Chronicle this week.
The American Indian burial ground and village site, so rich in history that it was dubbed the "grandfather midden," was examined and categorized under a shroud of secrecy before construction began this month on the $55 million Rose Lane development in Larkspur.
The 300-foot-long site contained 600 human burials, tools, musical instruments, harpoon tips, spears and throwing sticks from a time long before the introduction of the bow and arrow. The bones of grizzly and black bears were also found, along with a ceremonial California condor burial."

This is a big disgrace, on many levels. I am all for the preservation of rights for all cultures, but it still does not excuse ignorance. The fact you have an archaeological firm excavate with no intent of the recovery and disclosure of a significant site. The Builder thinking he is doing the right thing "In the eyes of the law" or the Native American Tribe. I guess if I was from an opposing tribe in that region, I would be upset that another tribe was deposed as the true ancestors without any authentication. I am kind of lost as to why excavate in the first place. seems like a bulldozer, a backhoe, and a dump truck could have done this faster and probably with less damage. The firm and the builder pointing a finger back to the tribe that they were only doing what they wanted is totally absurd. Somehow I get the feeling that a casino was born from the sacrifice of significant site, and all involved are okay with this.
              Thanks Charlie for sharing this.
Look to the ground for it holds the past!

Lol. OK, this happened in a southeastern state, unfortunately, forget which one. Big spread and 2 diggers hit one of the mounds on the spread at night. A few hours in, a native man appeared. And they could see through him. They fled in their truck, leaving everything behind. At about roughly the same time, the farmer was awaken to the sight of a very angry looking native man in his bedroom, looking directly at him before vanishing. Somehow, in that moment, the farmer knew exactly what was up. Hopped in his pickup and drove out to the mounds, only to intercept the pickup with the 2 looters. Blocked their way, walked up and told them he knew what they were doing and he would shoot them dead next time. I heard this story firsthand and personally have no reason to doubt it, Greg.
Another time a girl I knew told me how she and her sister were outside their home in South Kingstown, RI, when they saw a native brave running along the top of their colonial era stone wall, carrying a tomahawk, before he vanished. The one sister asked the other "what did you just see?" and got the un-influenced answer: an Indian brave running along the wall, so she knew they had both seen the same "apparition".
I know someone else with at least one, and possibly 2, similar encounters. I know this person very well and know her story is true, however you explain such things.

I've got no explanation and my religious convictions don't run to deep, but i'm a believer. My father spent the last six months of his life in a hospital bed in the house he built. I know it was him who visited our home many times after.
