  • Paleo in the Andes

High altitude sites discovered, with fishtail points.

Paleo-Indian hunters ventured high into the Andes Mountains as early as 12,800 years ago, as much as two thousand years sooner than previously thought.
The finding, reported Thursday in the journal Science, suggests that South America's first inhabitants raced across the continent rather than spreading slowly to its remotest corners.

Here are some of the points and tools found at one of the sites (Pucuncho.)
The top three points are Fluted Fishtails, the other points on the bottom are a stemmed point variety that can either be Archaic or later (Inca/Aymara and their Archaic ancestors) or Paleo, similar to some of the Great Basin and West Mexico Western Stemmed (or like the Channel Island paleo stemmed points off the coast of California.)
