  • Tn. Archaeologist

Hello All! I am trying to find a copy of the Tn. Archaeologist Magazine from 1985, Vol 13-1. There is an article about the Camp Creek Site, either Greene Co., or Cocke Co., Tn. Written by Madaline Kneberg and T.M.N. Lewis. I know it's a tough one, but would anyone have that, or an extra, or tell me where I might be able to obtain that particular issue? Thanks in advance, Paul

Hi Paul. I don't have the journal but I did a little digging around on the web to see if I could find anything to help out. I believe the publication you are referring to is from the 1957 year of the Tennessee Archaeologist not 1985 which may make it even harder to find. The Camp Creek site is in Greene Co., TN on the Nolichucky River. The University of Tennessee library would surely have a copy of it. My guess is that it would not be available for inter library loan. But they may be able to copy pages from it for a price. If I really needed that article then I would probably call them and see what they may be able to do. Lacking that then James Cambron has a thorough discussion of the Camp Creek point in "The Handbook of Alabama Archaeology". It is available free of charge at Gutenberg Press (www.gutenberg.org). I may be assuming falsely that you want the article because of interest in the point type. Of course the Camp Creek excavation back in the 1950's and the report generated was about more than that one point.

Thanks SJ for tour time and effort! Much Appreciated!! Actually the 1957 date makes more sense, it's reported to have been excavated in the 1950s.It's not about a point, it's about a turtle shell bowl or cup that was excavated there. It's supposed to be either pictured or described in this article. And I'm a stickler for accurate provenance. Here's a photo of it. I don't think there are to many authentic turtle shell cups out there! I'm not as familiar with those Miss. sites down that way. And I guess there are hundreds of those. We don't have those up here in Pa. But I love the cup and would like as much info as I can get on the site. There's gouge like tool marks all over the inside where the rib and back bone were removed. The edges are perfectly smooth from handling and polished. This was sold in a Putty auction back in 2012, Lot 35, and the collector who bought it gave it to me. I just Click image for larger version Name:	DSC07355.JPG Views:	1 Size:	194.5 KB ID:	269061
      want to verify the provenance.

It is an artifact in a sense, but not hand made like we think of " artifacts ". But it was something that was altered to suit a purpose, and I can only imagine a Indian eating a turtle shell cup full of squirrel stew!! I think it's super cool!

Are we linked to Facebook? I just received a Facebook message from The Tn. Division of Archaeology letting me know that I can contact the Site File Curator of Tn., and he gave me his name and email, and even telephone number!, and he may be able to find a copy of the magazine I'm referring to that has the published article on the Camp Creek Site. If a fellow forum member made this contact possible, Thank You very much! I don't know how my post went to the TDOA. Research, research, and more research, that's what this hobby is all about!! Thanks to who ever made this possible! Was it you SJ??

Hi Paul. Sorry about the late replay. Today, Nov. 4, is 1st time I've checked this thread since I made my initial response. No it was not me. I think the folks at the TN Div. of Arch. are tolling our forum out of professional interest. Probably doing it on the job. Trying to see what hobbyists are up to these days. Nice of them do provide you the article. Course they wanted something in return. Probably a fair exchange. Each party got what they wanted. I'm glad it worked out for you. And thanks for providing the link in your next post. I'll download it for reading later.

Camp_Creek_1957.pdf I just received this 25 page report from the TDOA about the Camp Creek Site, published in 1957 by M. Kneberg and T.M. Lewis. I thought maybe it might be of interest to some of the forum members. Turtle shell carapaces have been found there, and there is a high probability the one I posted was also found there. Re. email to me by Aaron Deter-Wolfe. The staff now wants to catalog and document this piece, and the response I received from TDOA was speedy and extremely informative! Thanks to who ever helped me with me with.
