    If you are interested in Native Americans in California, Stephen Powers' source book is indispensable.

    Powers was a journalist and amateur anthropologist who travelled extensively studying what (at that point) was left of California's many tribelets.

    His writing is typically patronizing - in some instances you feel he's talking of dog breeds instead of people - and many of his interpretations may be wrong, but you can sense his sympathy and appreciate his grasp on the need to document these doomed cultures (as by 1875 they were all but gone) and his observations on the details of customs, beliefs and day-to-day life are truly valuable.
