    Fascinating….

    The study….

    Abstract

We present evidence that in ~ 1650 BCE (~ 3600 years ago), a cosmic airburst destroyed Tall el-Hammam, a Middle-Bronze-Age city in the southern Jordan Valley northeast of the Dead Sea. The proposed airburst was larger than the 1908 explosion over Tunguska, Russia, where a ~ 50-m-wide bolide detonated with ~ 1000× more energy than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. A city-wide ~ 1.5-m-thick carbon-and-ash-rich destruction layer contains peak concentrations of shocked quartz (~ 5–10 GPa); melted pottery and mudbricks; diamond-like carbon; soot; Fe- and Si-rich spherules; CaCO3 spherules from melted plaster; and melted platinum, iridium, nickel, gold, silver, zircon, chromite, and quartz. Heating experiments indicate temperatures exceeded 2000 °C. Amid city-side devastation, the airburst demolished 12+ m of the 4-to-5-story palace complex and the massive 4-m-thick mudbrick rampart, while causing extreme disarticulation and skeletal fragmentation in nearby humans. An airburst-related influx of salt (~ 4 wt.%) produced hypersalinity, inhibited agriculture, and caused a ~ 300–600-year-long abandonment of ~ 120 regional settlements within a > 25-km radius. Tall el-Hammam may be the second oldest city/town destroyed by a cosmic airburst/impact, after Abu Hureyra, Syria, and possibly the earliest site with an oral tradition that was written down (Genesis). Tunguska-scale airbursts can devastate entire cities/regions and thus, pose a severe modern-day hazard.

Airbursts? Was hoping the article would elaborate on what is an airburst? The geology doesn't lie, king James Bible backs the story, ufo theriost have their view , still sounds like some sort of wepon to me

I put a thread up, few years ago, that was a Nova program describing the fall of the Chelyabinsk meteorite over the Russian city of the same name in 2013. Most of the damage from this meteorite was a result of the shock wave that arrived a few minutes after the air burst. Thousands cut by flying glass. If the air burst had occurred a few miles lower in the atmosphere, 1 million people would have been killed. That Nova video is no longer available, but here is a compilation of the shock wave that arrived minutes after the air burst.

You need to imagine that the air burst behind the destruction of this biblical city was 10x bigger than the 1908 Tunguska explosion, in the air over Siberia, which was itself 1000x bigger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

The air burst over Siberia in 1908 actually completely flattened 10’s of millions of trees. So the damage is not done by the huge meteorite itself. It vaporizes during the air burst, although many small meteorites still fell to Earth In Chelyabinsk. I own a few. This video does not show the actual moment of disintegration. It shows the arrival of the shock wave, which caused the damage and injuries. But this was a cap pistol compared to Tunguska, or compared to the air burst that destroyed a biblical city.

And this short article, by some of the authors of the paper, is a good summation that might help you understand what happens when something the size of a hydrogen bomb goes off, explosively vaporizes, above a city. The air burst will do incredible damage. This was not a weapon. The evidence gathered, by scientists of several disciplines, is probably the most compelling evidence proving it was a cosmic visitor, a small asteroid in all likelihood. This is phenomenal degree of evidence for what the authors claim. It could only have been a cosmic impact. (I love the subject of ufos, really in the news this year with the Pentagon report, and Navy pilots testimony, but, in this instance, we can forget that altogether). This was clearly a cosmic impact. Just an amazing discovery, IMHO….

”Flashing through the atmosphere, the rock exploded in a massive fireball about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) above the ground. The blast was around 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The shocked city dwellers who stared at it were blinded instantly. Air temperatures rapidly rose above 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit (2,000 degrees Celsius). Clothing and wood immediately burst into flames. Swords, spears, mudbricks and pottery began to melt. Almost immediately, the entire city was on fire.

Some seconds later, a massive shockwave smashed into the city. Moving at about 740 mph (1,200 kph), it was more powerful than the worst tornado ever recorded. The deadly winds ripped through the city, demolishing every building. They sheared off the top 40 feet (12 m) of the 4-story palace and blew the jumbled debris into the next valley. None of the 8,000 people or any animals within the city survived – their bodies were torn apart and their bones blasted into small fragments”.

Sorry for multiple replies. I cannot post more than one link per comment. This clip on the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia will show you what an air burst caused by the breakup of an asteroid or comet in the atmosphere can do. Millions of tress flattened by this event. The fall of the Chelyabinsk meteorite in 2013 was the largest such event since Tunguska….

Finally, this clip shows the moment the incoming Chelyabinsk meteorite exploded, the air burst, when it is at its brightest in the sky, and as well, shows the lingering smoke trail, and finally, the arrival of the shock wave, 3 minutes after the space rock exploded in the atmosphere. Note, that in the event that destroyed the city in the Jordan Valley, anyone looking up was instantly blinded. But, no matter, because 8000 people were killed instantly, their bodies ripped apart, their bones shattered into pieces. Imagine, no warning at all. Nobody who survived in the region would ever forget that day.

And a decent documentary on the Chelyabinsk fall. The most spectacular fall of our lifetimes……………

It's interesting how many oral traditions/histories of instant destruction blamed on Zeus, Dragons, God, etc. could have been caused by a relatively small meteorite.

WOW I knew there was a sonic boom associated with a large meteor and knew about the meteor burst, didn't realize the kind of damage it causes

Also really interesting is learning just how old some Aboriginal oral memories are where meteorite impacts, and other events in the deep past, are concerned. A lesson in the persistence of such memories over thousands of years.

We can learn much about meteor strikes in ancient Australia by examining the oral traditions of indigenous people.

Our knowledge of the existence of thousands of Near Earth Objects(NEO) in very recent years has led to an effort to catalog every one. But it’s an impossible task, and especially when such objects approach Earth from the direction of the sun, they are not easy to detect, not easy to see them coming, such as this recent “near miss”.

                      https://www.jpost.com/science/747-si...-coming-680052

”A large asteroid as wide as the wingspan of a Boeing 747 passed by the Earth recently, and scientists didn't even see it coming.
Dubbed 2021 SG, according to the NASA-backed International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center, the asteroid has a diameter of anywhere between 42-94 meters, with an average diameter of 68 meters. This size is around the wingspan of a 747, and is also around the height of the Cinderella Castle in Disney World and around half the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza”.

Read about that. It's happened before, more than once, it will happen again. Hopefully we do see it coming and can react. We could end up like the dinosaurs!

Agreed! And I can easily see how it could generate the story of Sodom. People at the time have to have thought only a god could smite an entire city in an instant, and without warning.

The doubt is deep with many learned scientist disclaiming the papers reality. A shame us humans can't get past lying to each other in promoting our agenda or greed.
Is it possible it happened? Was the whole scenario created to fearmonger? Hopefully the future will provide true proofs.

And it sits on the top of ledges . You just think of it being billions of years old and the earth cooling . It’s got bubbles and all different colors . We use it like flagstone .
Its truly a wonder of the cosmos looking at some pieces we break off .
