      This was a mystery quite a few years ago. It turns out that those plummets weren't made from hematite, they were made from Limonite or Goethite. When cooked, like Ron does his chert, limonite looses the water molecules that are bound to it, and the anhydrous (dehydrated) version becomes hematite.

      I'm sure it's more complex that just tossing them in a fire, but they took a really soft powdery rock that you can carve with your fingernail and turned it into an insanely heavy hardstone.
