      Just from your photo and the location I would guess the gorget is made from a fine-grained ferruginous (iron cemented) sandstone, these may be found as interbeds within some of the slates in the Alabama/ Tennessee/ Kentucky area.

        That knife is beautiful, I'd have a hard time not staring at it all day. Id really want to find one similar and recreate the handle or have the Cherokee who come for our trade thing do it for me. Love to have a piececlike that like original but not damaging it of course.

          I have a banded slate gouge posted on here.I thought the same thing as far as it being petrified wood .Sure pretty material and it makes it all the more unique....mjm
