  • Interesting Rock or Artifact?

This was found by my nephew in the Ouachita region in Arkansas. Thoughts appreciated on natural or Artifact.

I don't know if it is natural or man made. But whatever it is I think it is not something made by old time Native Americans and I say that because I've never seen anything like it or any photos of such a stone. If it were a Native American artifact then the only thing I can image is some kind of mortar with the pestle missing. But if it was some kind of mortar then why the slight curvature? Mother Nature often produces some strange shapes but I've never seen anything that even faintly resembles this piece. Under what conditions was this found? River or stream? Farmers plowed field in association with or near broken pottery, arrowheads, etc.? Lying in the middle of a gravel road? In a pile of rocks with other weird rocks? Often the context in which a mystery stone is found will provide a clue as to what it might be. Maybe someone who is a collector from that area will know. If so, I would like to know as well.
