Hi all. This is a small grooved axe that was found by a friend many years ago on the east end of Long Island. It was given to me in exchange for a small donation to his charity. I asked him about the black substance on the back end of the axe and he said it was there when he found it. I was also wondering about the age of the axe. My friend passed away a few years ago and im lucky enough to have quite a few of his artifacts in my collection for safe keeping in his memory.

That’s a fine axe… I’m unfamiliar with eastern axes… but in my opinion it looks to be a 3/4 groove, that has been exposed to extreme heat/ fire.. that caused the “ popping”/discoloration… looks to be a type of hardstone that is found in the Midwestern states…. Cool piece…👍Southeastern Minnesota’s driftless area
