    I agree with Greg, Ken, and Jessy from the previous plummet post. It seems like plain ole common sense to me that they would not use polished ornaments as net weights. Here are two examples of net weights, from my personal finds. I just cant believe this plummet, not my personal find, would have been used as a net weight. however, i am not sure exactly what a plummets use would be. Could they be used exclusively for a bola device? Agree or disagree?

    Interesting question, Wayne. Until recently, I assumed plummets were fishing gear, because here in New England they are classified as weights used in fishing. Polishing is infrequent here, seldom would we expect to see a fine example of slate like the one in your photo. Maine does have some wild plummets, maybe somtimes rivaling the "charmstones" of California. At any rate, I revised my opinion after the inconsistancies regarding usage as fishing gear, in some instances, was pointed out to me awhile back:
