I typically hunt for arrowheads but found this today. The stones I usually find are coastal plains chert and quartz. The color and shape of this was very different though so I picked it up. Found along a coastal river, north of Charleston, SC. I find sharks teeth occasionally, but this wasn't the right shape. Looks like a fossilized canine tooth. Or, maybe just a rock??

Put a flame to it.
If it smells like burning hair "Proteins"
then it may be a chip of ivory.
If no smell maybe tip of crinoid or blastoid cup. True fossil.
If it smells like burning paint......well then it may just be dried paint.
What ever the case let us know what you find out.

It is a "Rock" when it's on the ground.
It is a "Specimen" when picked up and taken home.
