  • can anyone help identify this?

my grandpa just showed me this petrified wood he found, and we're having trouble identifying this thing on the back. we think it's a worm or larva... any thoughts?

You might be right in your assessment. At the very least I think that it could have been a hole left by one. Click image for larger version

In life there are losers and finders. Which one are you?

I also could be companion material presses onto the surface as it lay in matrix.
Dissimilar minerals can sometimes be sandwiched between like stones and create some bizarre effects.
Yours looks to be carbon from a source re-deposited after wood fossilized.
The grainy wood replacement mineral makes for some rather difficult possibilities for a worm or any soft tissue to fossilize.
      Not worm not larvae.
Hey I could be wrong (I have been known to be wrong before) and it wound up being a burrow as suggested above. Eh "Oldman"

It is a "Rock" when it's on the ground.
It is a "Specimen" when picked up and taken home.
