  • Awesome lithostrotion coral fossil

Decided to check out a short little creek that runs through the bottom of a small draw. I've hunted it before and knew about this fossil but I had never picked it up because it is somewhat large and bulky. Today is the day I finally picked it up. It is some sort of lithostrotion coral, it dates back to the ordovician period. SE Missouri find. I know its not much for scale but it is leaning up against a 6×6 in the pics.

Yeah, it was nearly completely buried in mud the first time I found it, so I dug it out and saw how big it is. Probably weighs 25 pounds. I usually have my hands full of other things so I stashed it til I could get it out.

Little bit of a workout, about a half mile walk with it but it was worth it.

Nice specimen. Most corals are not very impressive.
In this case nice "size matters".
It is a "Rock" when it's on the ground.
It is a "Specimen" when picked up and taken home.

Thanks Jess. I was pretty impressed by the size of it. I've got another specimen that I pulled out of the same creek bed that I need your thoughts on. I'll try to post it soon.
