Petrified or Fossilized

Bone becomes fossilized as it is buried within a substrate & absorbs the various minerals encasing it. That absorption not only preserves it but adds weight & can change its original color. An example of color change is a shark tooth. Shark teeth are white but when fossilized can be black, blue or gray, depending on the minerals it absorbed.Child of the tides

Rarely does anyone refer to fossilized wood as fossilized wood, yet it truly is fossilized.
The natural act of perminealization is the actual terminology used to described fossilization.
Now for a kitchen style "test", burn a small area with a cig lighter. If it creates a stinch such as burning hair it is a preserverd bone.
If it does not produce the stinch it is most likely fossilized. It is a "Rock" when it's on the ground.
It is a "Specimen" when picked up and taken home.
