  • Can't figure out what this is.....

    I found this in a field that I hunt artifacts, but can't imagine what it is.
    I think it looks like scales from a reptile, but how come there is still color?
    Any ideas?

    Also found this small petrified skull. I think it looks like a snake head.

      Hi Gary
      I suspect that's a piece of fossilised tabulate coral... probably Favosites... also know as "honeycomb rock". Not familiar with the deposits in your area, but Devonian would be usual. Something like this:

      The honeycomb cavities frequently fill with calcite during fossilisation. Mineral traces may then create a range of colours in the yellow/orange region. It's really pretty, but I'll bet that would look superb if you were able to get it cut and polished.
      Not sure what the other item is. Might conceivably be a bone fragment, but it's not a skull.
