The type of flint and patination on this large blade is one that stands out from anything I have found. It came from the sub-soil of an area that has been removed by diggers in preparation for quarrying the rocks below.
The chance to get to deep soil deposits was not to be missed. The find spot was well below the old plough soil (which has been removed and banked for the post quarry restoration). So it has survived intact and is mint sharpness.
The bulb has been removed during secondary working; snapped off with patination on the broken face, indicating it was done at the time of fabrication and not modern damage.
