Sad. Kind of crazy to think about in 2020, someone can still be killed from an arrow shot by uncontacted indigenous (Native Americans). Not blaming them. they are being killed, just shows you the acient past isn't really that far gone.Central Ohio

Very tragic, especially since the poor guy had been regarded as a friend who cared for their interests. The account I read elsewhere said that the entire party was fired upon by a band of five warriors, but as they scrambled to take cover behind a vehicle, only Mr Franciscato was hit. It was said that small 'war parties' like this lash out from time to time against incursions by illegal miners or poachers, and that there had been recent reports of such activities. This may have been a case of 'mistaken identity'.
I don't know if this particular tribe uses poison arrows but, if not, pulling out the arrow was probably the wrong thing to do. Easy to say in hindsight. RIP.Last edited by painshill; 09-12-2020, 07:30 AM.I keep six honest serving-men (they taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.

Yes, it is sad, and the “uncontacted” tribes(a term meaning they have chosen to have no further contact, does not mean they are unaware of the outside world) need all the friends they can get, as they truly face genocide under President Bolsonaro....

I like to take broad views where historical trends are concerned. And it is a fact that the struggle and relationships, good and bad, that developed with the opening of the America’s represented by the voyages of Columbus, is still ongoing in the America’s, and nowhere is that more obvious than in the Amazon basin. And there have been clashes over the years as the modern world has exploited the natural resources of the Amazon basin. But Bolsonaro has made very clear that deforestation of the Amazon is something he is 100% fine with, and eradication of uncontacted tribes is also something that he is truly fine with. He has made statements that makes it quite clear that he wants these tribal people gone.Last edited by CMD; 09-13-2020, 07:12 AM.Rhode Island

Hi Charlie. An interesting thread about a sad story. Regarding Bolsonaro's attitude about the natives, if he is as anti native as you report (never heard before that he has said that he wants these tribal people gone but will take your word for it) then it looks like Andrew Jackson's spirit has been reincarnated into the body of the president of Brazil. And that indeed is worse than the tragic killing of this man who had spent much of his life protecting the native people.

Very ironic, indeed. This CNN article did not make very clear why this man and his party were there in the first place. When it said they were following tracks, was as it to track down the people involved in illegal activity? If so, it seems if he was not a cop that maybe he should not have been involved in law enforcement activities. I also wonder if these cops were a Federal police group or from the State. Also, don't know if they were on the trail of indigenous people for info about the illegal activity and he was requested by the cops to help if they needed information from the native folks to help locate the trespassing loggers, etc. If as Roger's post indicate the whole party was under attack then that is a different matter. I suspect, but don't know, that the native reserves in Brazil are not governed as Reservations are in our country today. And also, what are the rights of indigenous Brazilians to protect their lands from trespassers. Lots of questions need answering before we have a coherent understanding of just what happened and why. We also, don't know what could be the extent of the involvement of any bad cops in illegal activities. Cops do sometimes take bribes to keep their "eyes closed" to illegal activities. One scenario is that the warriors saw some bad cops: an unlikely scenario? maybe, maybe not.

Franciscato made his way to the area where the tribesmen had been seen and pleaded with the villagers to avoid close contact at all cost and not offer any encouragement. A few days later he came within eyesight of the tribesmen and gestured to them that they should return to the forest. Apparently they did so but, what caused him to rush back in September, was a report that five tribesmen walking naked in a v-shaped formation and carrying bows and arrows had emerged from the jungle in a rural area near the town of Seringueiras in another area of Rondônia. They surprised a young girl gathering firewood near her home and her father let out a terrified scream, but the tribesmen departed without harming or threatening anyone.
Franciscato interviewed villagers about what they had seen and set off with a colleague, following some fresh tracks. Apparently, he asked for police assistance and was given an escort, but probably more for protection against the ruthless illegal loggers and miners who roam the area and shoot anyone that might interrupt their activities. It was suggested that it may have been the police presence (uniforms, guns, vehicles) which triggered the attack.
As Charlie pointed out, President Bolsonaro favours opening up more of the Amazon to development, has called Indigenous territories “archaic” and a “hindrance to economic growth”, and has compared the communities living in the forest to “animals in a zoo”. FUNAI’s budget has been progressively slashed, its numbers reduced and several of its field offices closed.Last edited by painshill; 09-14-2020, 05:24 PM.I keep six honest serving-men (they taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.
