Thanks for the input that was very helpful. We do some burlington heat treated up here. I have some but they are only tops or bases...according to some of my knapping friends. We do have a fair amount of flint ridge from ohio in our area. I was just having trouble between the two. You are right on the orange someone did say they felt it was Pennsylvania jasper and even gave me a site link. I feel comfortable with that now. It is one of my favorites due to the colour age and being so perfect I had to show it off again and also confirm for my self the lithic origin

I would say that is not Burlington. Heat treated Burlington will have a pinkish to red hue although some may not even change color and yes sometimes it will get a waxy appearance. But just about any heat treated material will do the same. That piece does not look like any creek stain I have seen on Burlington either. I also agree with Josh that Burlington as well as other flint can travel a long way but I think Ontario is a stretch.

I guess this is a woodland preform.

Hi Josh. Thanks much for posting this old thread that came before I joined the forum. I got a good education and an answer to the question I asked in your other thread. I never knew anything about heat treating and what it does to the various lithics until I joined this forum.

Some finds from over the summer. The last one on right is heat treated burlington, and maybe a rice shallow side notched.

I've only had one hunt outside the Carolinas it was in Dyer county Tennessee only found three artifacts a nice hammerstone a small blade and this chip thinking it's heat treated Burlington. Just a flake but did drive seven hours to get it.

Now this was a good campfire story . I really learned a lot from this . I read about what heat treating does but didn't have a visual . I had no idea the degree in which it changed color
or how long litics would be in the heat for .
                  Thank you .
In your top pic what would you say that bottom left
artifact is? I find these and wonder ...

Thanks, it's just when I think of rocks pink doesn't really come to mind. Many places have unique and visually pleasing lithic's like the east has lot's of quartz ETC. Finding H.T. Burlington is nice, it's usually going to be woodland or later but You know You are in a good spot. Oh, and that piece in bottom left I believe is The base of a preform or blade.

After finding that broken Point I figured I'd throw it in this Topic. I really do like this material, I could walk out the back door and find flakes of it and sometimes even broken point's in The old Field. It was kind of amazing, still is just as cool too. I would ask Other's abut what I was finding but being 15 years ago I don't remember which The first Person was that told Me I was finding Heat Treated Burlington, but They weren't lying.

It's kind of a Brotherhood Thing. To Teach and Respect.
