  • Tiger Chert Patination Experiment Update

The experiment has run for 20 months now. On October 10, 2016 I took the two spalls and a freshly knapped point and placed them on a rock in full sunlight. The pieces are developing a patina in this short period of time simply by leaving them in open air exposed to the sunlight. The first picture is the original and the second picture was taken today. Now I plan to bury them in a wet area with black soil. I will give you another update next year.

That is just way too awesome, what a great experiment! I remember when you started this, and that’s incredible, the patina change in such a short amount of time! I may have to try this with some of my local materials too

Cool results Ron, I doubt most other Lithics patinated as quickly or as dramatically as this tiger chert. Sure is pretty stuff!

Amazing that the material could patinate so quickly. Great experiment!
