Gotta watch your focus Tam. When you're using microscopic optics it really really makes a difference.

I’ll see if anyone has an interest in this . I know a few of you have microscopes but for you that don’t this might make a good thread and join in .... Tom

It might be better if you show the actual artifact along with the closeup. maybe add some photos in a set showing the artifact then closer and closer until you finally add that microscope picture. Than add somethings like what you think you see. so other might comment and tell you what they see. Click image for larger version

10 X is plenty 20 will work in some cases but beyond that you begining to look into the matrix of the stone. All you really want to do is enhance the surface of the rock. That is where the important information is. Tom , Ron and Krisrock shared some very nice photos below. m

Of course just trying to to test Hoss .
You can move this to just a test .

I used a loupe or magnifying glass/lens and took a pic with my phone... A single "agatized" polyp...the whole point except for a tiny bit of rind is solid coral polyps. Works pretty well and if you take it in large format it's even better magnification.

Hey Tamara, I enjoy using the microscope with ancient artifacts and some lithics. These are pictures of an Arkose.

You betya Tamara, There are many beautiful lithics. Using a microscope allows us to see more of that wonderful beauty. This Arkose was ancient spalls that Chad (Cskelton) from Montana gave me.

That's George Town Rootbeer flint. The Martindales probably 7000 to 8000 years old, and that is mineral build up. I can zoom in from there if I need to. I can go twice that close but I have to activate surface depth averaging some times it gets a little blurry. KEYENCE
