  • ?? Root Beer / Strange Dimples ??

I have purchased a lot of rocks and many are interesting. A lot of the material from rock dealers is actually ancient spalls and cores. This is a solid rock of Root Beer from the Edwards Plateau in Texas. I have never seen one that looked like this. It has a heavy ancient patina. What could have caused all those strange looking dimples? I don't think it has anything to do with flintknapping.

Looking at it again , none the less how cool is that . Are you going to knap that ? I would almost want to just look at it and study it .

Yes that's why I took pictures and posted this. I hope someone has the answer.

I wonder if it isn’t fire pops from a wet stone while cooking the cobble?

I have done some heat treatment. The rock that I destroyed because I didn't dry it correctly did not look anything like this.

That’s the only thing I could think of as a reason

I don’t think it’s pot lids Red. IDK what caused the dimples...

Hey Ron, I'm not saying I think this idea is your answer, because I would guess pot lids first, flaking second and then maybe my suggestion...but could possibly be the rock came under some kind of particle separation while it was forming and viscous, causing weak areas that eventually were fractured away on that weak front. I have included pics of thick ceiling mud as it is pulled away from contact (wet brush) causing a star pattern. Not a perfect match but just an idea.

We really don’t see the material in hunks here, that was walked in. All we see is the flakes and points made from Edwards. The NA people here really wasted nothing, especially lithic material. So , I have no ideas on the stone...

It’s a puzzle, and now that I’m looking and thinking at it more, I don’t think the dimples are natural. Have your already started knapping on it ? If not I’d hold off. Thinking a trade blank....

Thanks JJ, It is a puzzle. I have not knapped the rock.

I've found a few chucks that looked similar to that and for the most part, the chert seemed to be more brittle and slightly easier to knap than similar pieces without the pot marks.

The rock dealer took a spall from the other side. I can tell from the spall that this is good solid chert. I will take a picture of the other side.

This is the bottom side of the same Root Beer tab. The rock dealer had removed one large spall. In the gray area of the bottom right of the photo I see a few small dimples.
