  • Montana Red Porcelanite

Bret gave me four large rocks of Red Porcelanite from Montana. I took pictures and posted here because Greg might want to use in his lithics info.

Hey Red, I knapped the gray porcelanite that Bret gave me but I haven't knapped any red Porcelanite yet.

Thanks Bret, It's good to know that the red knapps the same. I can't wait to get some slabbed up and start using it.

Thanks Ethan, I like how the flake scars show on Porcelanite. It is kinda tough to knap but when finished you have a real tough point. The ancient people must have loved this lithic for its toughness. And I think they must have been even more happy to find it in Red.

Just imagine what it would look like, if it was rubbed down in mineral oil.

Thanks Chad, I sure want to see the points here. I'm glad to now know that the gray artifacts you found and the gray core you gave me is porcelanite. Your ancient artifact points will be a great addition to this thread.

Here are a few examples of red porcelainite that we found here at the house. A couple appear darker than the others but all are the same stone. These finds represent paleo up to the end. Couple real heartbreakers in the mix.. i think that porcelainite was a favorite, in whatever color we find it, as they made very high quality artifacts from it. Much like high grade basalt. My 2 cents. Middle of Montana.

Thanks Chad, WOW those are awesome. A rock that worked well 10,000 years ago still knapps good today.

I might add a spring that made for a good home 10,000 years ago is still a great homesite today.
