  • Wondering about material

I have looked at the lithics posts here but haven't seen this type of material posted anywhere. The strange thing is this stuff is almost always associated with any campsite we found. It might not have been valued that highly as we find it in larger pieces than the more valued chalcedony type of material. Click image for larger version

I've wondered if it's a fossilized chert or something.

Well we are on the opposite side of the Wind River range from Lander but I'm sure the Native Americans went back and forth across south pass so that could be the source of the stuff. I never would have figured that out. Thank you Hoss

Try with the power cord either left or right. That's what I meant by holding the phone in a horizontal position.

Hi Realistone, I'm guessing it some sort of Quartzite material, that is what it looks like to me. Some Knappers have a hard time working Quartzite. Yet I watched one fellow knapp it with ease. Very nice looking points made from it. Thanks for showing some eye catching points. Kim

Hey Kim, Quartzite is all over the shart for ease of knapping. Some is near impossible to knap and some is very easy to knap.

This material doesn't look like any quartzite that I have ever seen.

It's definitely not a Quartzite material

Thanks Guys for correcting me. I looked closer at the enlarged Picture. You are right It does look cherty. We have a brown quartzite here and I didn't look close enough! I stand corrected. Kim
