WONDERSTONE IN THE VERNON HILLS, TOOELE COUNTY, UTAH
This information is from Christine M. Wilkerson:
The Vernon Hills wonderstone is a welded-vitric tuff (vitric means glassy) of rhyolitic composition. It is a volcanic rock composed predominantly of volcanic glass particles which have been welded or stuck together by heat and compacted by the weight of overlying material. Alteration of the rock by circulating ground water produced the colorful banding. The maroon and yellow-brown colors are due to the presence of iron oxides.

Here are a few of the rocks I just received:

I do expect a challenge with this material. Is it improved with heat?

Ridiculous. Liberace's throne couldn't be more gaudy...Nature finally has a slip of taste.

I've got some of Brett's works of art. I'd be interested in one of those when you are done. Then we can chat on it.

Hey Glenn, I will be glad to give you a few points. I'll give you some other cool materials too. It will be a few months before I start knapping this material.

Maybe we can trade something other than the rock from my area.

This looks beautiful very expensive Delicatessen Delight: purple onion stuffed with lox, capers, bright yellow deli mustard. Please know this is compliment!

Thanks Gary, I took the pictures with wet rock. They are not nearly as colorful dry.

When you cook them should the colors be more visible Ron?

Hey Glen, I hope so. I have never tried to knap this material before. I think a little clear mineral oil would make a big difference too.
          Working...
