  • Is this Quartz?

Ohio has some beautiful, (quartz?), specimens. If this piece is quartz, why did the Native Americans of OH not use this material for points? I may be answering my own question, but I suppose with the availability of easier knapping material, it just wasn't necessary.

we call that stuff field quartz down here. It has lots of cracks, crevices and veins not very knappable.

Pamela Ruthie, there was so much flint available the quartz was most likely ignored in your area. I am sure it was used in small quantities if quality material was at hand. I found this map of flint sources in your state. http://ohsweb.ohiohistory.org/galler...?g2_itemId=107
With that much high quality material available quartz was probably just left alone. That piece you found is of very poor quality for knappability . If it was struck with a hammer stone that type of material would probably cube rather than break on a plane.
I hope what Butch and I described has helped.
