I can't say I've seen that material in my stomping grounds.

Mel, I agree with Hoss. Looks like felsite. Might very well be Hingham felsite from south of Boston, this being the piece Hoss is referring to. I've only found a couple pieces of Hingham in RI, but a friend from near Plymouth tells me it's common in his neck of the woods.

A shame indeed. that would have been a center piece for sure. Charlie thanks for showing that point again Looks like a Mansion Inn to me a very rare type in a rare material.

Yes, That is volcanic rhyolite that came from an ancient lava flow that is found in one small spot on the shore of Narragansett bay, And looks exclusively like that and is found no where else in the world.

It's the rare purple color variety of rhyolite. It also occurs sporadically at the Caledonia rhyolite outcrops near Gettysburg, Pa. Used extensively by the broad point cultures of the transitional period in Pa.

Hmm.. I wonder if it is the same ancient volcanic fault line, and it pokes up again in PA. I have seen both types of the purple in Narragansett bay. The purple that is striped like the pictures above, and the purple with the speckles in it too, from the same deposit. Is it striped in PA or speckled?
