  • Heat altered chert.

    Heat treating was used to improve knapability...If that's a word! Heat treating seems to have started in middle archaic times and more widely used in woodland time. A dovetail or Clovis made with heat altered material is a Red flag!! The blades are Bayport chert...The pink one is heat treated. The Snyders is heat treated burlington.

    It's cool how the heat really changes the properties of the material. Really brings out some cool colors too!

          Cool, the big one in my above pic is also Burlington, sorry about the lighting, it's pink and red.
