                  Tom The book Beneath these Waters a study of the Savannah River Explains what the Archaeologist think they are on page 45 explanation and 47 photos. It was a study done before the Russel dam was built. Sharyn Kane & Richard Keeton was authors. If you don't have a copy you can read it on line. I am not sure how you were thinking it could be used to start fires. At one time before this study they were thought to be net sinkers but all of them were found around hearths instead of in water.

                  I looked at the piece and thought if you held it under your feet and used the hole as a guide/pivot, with a sprinkle of tinder and spun a stick between your palms you may start a fire.

                  I was just imagining what it might be.

                  Anyhow, it very cool.
