  • Birdstone Tail Section

This recent acquisition is the most beautiful......delicate......elegant......artistic .....pleasing....awe-inspiring .....hunk of rock I have ever held in my hand. And it's only a 2 inch x 2 inch tail section! I mentioned to the seller, if you ever happen to find the rest of it....give me a call.

Yep, that's the head! Looks like Diorite with quartz inclusions. Almost makes it porphyritic!

Paul is right, that is an amazing porphyry birdstone head.

I know we don't discuss values, but if that were whole it would
              be wow.

If the women don\'t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

If you want to see a bit of magic, get it wet. The colors in the phenocryst (light colored spots) should get a lot more vibrant, and the contrast between light and dark will pop. Most of the high end examples have been lightly oiled. And in antiquity I'd imagine they were polished with bear grease or some other oil.

I'm a bit embarrassed that I originally thought it was the tail section....I had never seen a birdstone in person before. I almost didn't purchase it....just kinda threw it on 'the pile' of items I was interested in from a multi-hundred piece Old Timer collection. Extremely inexpensive.
