  • Farm Land - 2/11/2022

A new potential permission farmer called and wanted to meet with me before allowing me to hunt his 3600 acre cotton farm. We drove the farm in his truck while he pointed out seasonal playa lakes, patches of CRP, and his stripped and blown cotton. An old farm hand had found a cigar box full of points 15+ years ago, but the farm has not been hunted since. In the end, he gave me permission and I’ll be hunting it next week after some more windy weather. I squeezed in some time on my other permissions in the area, and found a unique black dart point that I have no idea of the type. A broken tan point, likely Bulverde, a uniface scraper, and a small hammer stone. It was a good day with potential for the future!

Yes it is double notched. At first I thought it was broken, but all the edges are worked. It was either made asymmetrically or resharpened that way. Did not find any type like it,

I remember seeing double notched points but I forget where that article is or where they were found..

The black one sure looks like a Merkle (Ohio double notch). They do make it pretty far south but not quite down to Texas. Interesting find.

Thanks fldwlkr. The spoon was stamped “1847 Rogers Bros AI”. Research on the interweb says it was manufactured between 1867 and 1973 (big range) and is silver plated. Sending it along with the spanner wrench I found last week to the farmer who is putting together a display of modern artifacts from the farm.

Looks like it was once a fluted point.

It is fluted, causing the edges to be beveled. I especially like the fine serrations.

If that broken stemmed base is edge ground, it could be Early Stemnef Lancolate.

GarGuy - The edge doesn’t feel completely ground. Here’s some me pics of the base edge.

Looks like a Merkle. or a Evans. Evans are found in east TX and surrounding areas. But looks more Merkle with the area between the notches being pointed. Looks identical to some I've seen found in the Ozarks.

Yep on the points. Not an Evans or Sinner. It does look a lot like those merkles..

Thanks flintguy, Apache, and GarGuy for suggesting Merkle. I hadn’t considered it due to it’s range NE of TX. But it does look ALOT like the example in Overstreet. I agree it’s not an Evans, I have one from SE TX (see photo for side by side of the two). Maybe it got out here in west TX via trade. Wouldn’t be the first time I found one way out of range!

Glad to hopefully help. NDN's got around, that's for sure. Found a head scratcher on the War Eagle creek one time. Took it to Don Dickson and he identified it as a Neosho Phase knife made from Petrified Wood. Style and material evidently came out of Mississippi, long way from the Ozarks!

Sorry GarGuy, I thought you were saying the black one was a broke, lol. Yes, the broke tan one feels like the base edges are ground. That would be cool if it’s an Early Stemmed Lanceolate as that site would include Paleo cultures. The more pronounced shoulders on mine give me pause though.
