                How can you determine if a tool is from a specific period of time, like the scraper pictured above?
                I understand some of the obvious techniques like fluting a basal grinding, but on the item above, what makes it appear paleo? Is it the small flaking on the edge?

                That's a really good question and there is no absolute answer. In east tx, virtually the only people that core struck tools like that were paleo. In other areas I understand later cultures did as well. That one has all the subtle characteristics. Basically an over shot. Carefully prepared platform, micro retouch. Steep bevel working end, sand polish, high grade material, etc.
