  • Quick walk paid off!

A couple days ago I got off work early and couldn't resist hitting up one of my favorite camps on my way home. I figured if I really hustled the couple miles out to it I would have about a hour to look and I'm sure glad I did , I filled my pockets with brokes and found a few awesome pieces, including my new favorite blade/scraper I'm not sure exactly what you would call it? Not bad for a hour and twelve minutes lol!

Well worth it. I like the fishtail-based style. Not sure why your thread was showing as “unapproved”, but sometimes the system has a hiccup I guess. You had a great short hunt…

Thanks. That's the second one I've found in that camp with the split base, I was thinking maybe a Hanna, but I'm still looking into it.

I'm glad I got it before a cow stepped on it, it has some nice flaking and is razor sharp, I wish there was a way to date it, I've found a couple other pieces in the general area that are a lot older than most of what I'm finding out there.

Awesome hunt! You see those style side knives over on Mandan sites in the Dakotas, I'm sure other agricultural used them as well.

      Thank you,
That's interesting, I don't know anything about the Mandan but I'll have to do some research on them, I'm always looking to learn new things.

Here are some of the brokes, this camp always seems to have a wide variety of lithics. The one that's broke down the middle and is half round looks like it could have been a really funky blade, possibly a round circle with a base, sure would have liked to see it whole.

You have a multi generational camp. The whole point is a hanna dart point, archaic. The small one is an arrowhead, much later. I find side knives like that one too. I think they were very important to them. extremely well made and of the best lithics..

It's definitely one of my favorite camps with the variety of artifacts I've found there and the crazy amount of different types of lithics. I definitely agree that a blade like this one would be of great importance to the maker, the old boy who made the one I found sure spent some time flaking it and getting it razor sharp and the lithic used is really nice maybe a dark agate but I'm not for sure.

All the different lithics are one of my favorite parts of finding artifacts, now I just have to learn what they all are.
