  • Looking for info on Bison trails

I was doing some research , looking for new angles on where to go looking for artifacts. I thought about old bison trails . I have been looking this subject up on line not much luck finding anything.
Would anyone know if this information is available anywhere . Thanks for any info.

    Hi Andrew
I’m amazed you can’t find what you need. Maybe if you search “buffalo trace” (how they are usually referred to) you will have more luck. You have a big one running through Kentucky, do you not… of which the Cumberland Gap is part?:

After just a few moments of idle Googling I didn’t have too much difficulty finding information like this:
    http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/hoosie...fsbdev3_017492

    and maps like this:

    http://www.foresthistory.org/ASPNET/...story/sec8.htm

Even if you find non-detailed maps you shouldn’t have too much difficulty matching them up to features on large scale modern geological maps, or Google-Earth, or even ordinary maps, since railroads often follow old traces.
I think what you need is there for the finding if you give Google a bit more direction and exclude “bourbon, whiskey and distillery” from your search terms.
I keep six honest serving-men (they taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.

        Interesting links painshill.
It is also interesting to note how scarce bison remains are in the eastern states. Also with a supposedly large number of bison you would think kill sites would have been found. Evidently bone preservation conditions for that part of the country must really be poor.

Thanks for info , Many Bison remains have been found around Big Bone Lick State park there is no collecting there . I was looking for more local bison trials in boone county. The main Bison trail that goes thru Kentucky is well known. Research on Indians in this county of kentucky is well known also and fairly easy to obtain. I was out today and ran into local farmer he gave me some good tips on old Bison trails so its all coming together slowly . Thanks for replys .
