Pottery Vessel, Use Unknown, Native American?

Here is a great old piece of pottery from the recent collection I purchased. Thought I would take a little time to add a few more items today that have puzzled me as to either origin or intended use, or both! This piece is unique and still retains most of the original paint. One of my favorites! The piece had to be carried or hung as it cannot stand on its own due to its shape. I am hoping someone here can attribute the design to a certain area or people. I appreciate all replies and opinions! Just a note, most of this collection dates to hundreds of years old to thousands and is quite diverse believed to be South American to Alsaskin and inbetween.

That one looks very Mexican, with the painted design and big handle. It could be from further south too.
