  • An Engraving From Florida

This extraordinary piece comes from the Tick Island shell mounds on the Saint Johns river...It’s a modified and engraved raccoon jawbone with a variation of the running scroll as symbols consistent with the Southern death cult,( pic 1).......Pic 2 are several variations from Tick Island, these were made as sets, with a right and left and most likely were part of a mask, or some such ceremonial paraphernalia ..The thing that fascinates me is how graceful and evenly spaced the etching is, it’s as though not a single pointed scriber was used, but a triple pointed one, used with single motions as it were...Anyway, enjoy it and thanks for lookiin

Just when I think I've seen it all, you prove me wrong Hal. It's an impressive carving for sure.

That looks more like what the mountain people like the Incas or pre Incas would do. I can't speak for all the tribal groups though. The Shipibo tribe was the predominant group in the area and they would paint their pottery, their faces and sew their clothing with similar designs

That is an amazing piece of art. How did they do that? I love the designs and patterns of the page you copied as well. Looks like some stuff out of Sun Circles and Human Hands.
Just wow on all that florida stuff.

That is something that could for sure be called museum quality. It amazes me how the Native Americans could make top notch work without the aid of modern tools.

A top line craftsman for sure, and whether, a triple, or single prong graver, that's a mighty steady hand that made it. Thanks for posting it.

Your just a lucky guy Hal. You come up with some amazing Museum quality Artifacts. It's so rare to find bone objects intact, let alone with etching! Thanks for showing this to us. Kim

A pre ceramic Archaic site, no European contact, Fiber tempered pottery...thanks for thoughts.most likely shark teeth, extremely plentiful. is one reason, Florida had first class engraving and wood artifacts.
