  • An Amazing Florida Shell Celt

I believe this piece was fashioned from a helmet shell, not hundred percent sure..They’re a large 9” or longer thick lipped Gulf water shell...This celt has a double beveled working end an is an amazing example...It’s from the Homassassa river, Citrus county Florida..I believe shell is a dense as stone and a stone one of this size and shape would be about the same weight and no I don’t have any scientific data..I just have a natural feel for those kinds of things, Lol. hey, Thanks for the 👀

Just like the quartz artifacts, I think I'd be stepping over stuff like that, never noticing it. Good thing I have chert up here.

Not much in shell work up here I imagine, when I get back out to Florida next year I'll have something to look forward to.

I would think more of a hoe or gouge unless there is a bit Hal

Hard to photograph and hold..it has mainly a single bevel edge bit and a very slight opposite beveled edge one, I believe it to be a woodworking tool...probably for canoes
