They tell me no pictures showed up on the last thread so I'm posting it again.-----I'm joining to a thread Artifascination did a few days ago. Arti posted a black Steatite pipe fragment. Once I realized what it was I remembered I have a whole pipe very similar to his fragment. So I asked him if I could do a thread comparing the two and he said yes. So Pict 1 and 2 are what Arti showed us. Pict. 3 and 4 is a pipe I purchased many years ago. I believe his and mine are of the same material and type. I really like this fine pipe and can imagine it all decked out with feathers and beads. What are your thoughts? Are they close to the same as I surmise? Enjoy Kim

FWIW, the Spanish introduced hemp into the Caribbean in the 1500's for making rope and sail patch. It was probably in Florida shortly there after, but it wasn't much of a cash crop in the American colonies until the 1700's. The English controlled trade in many things, and rope production was one of those items.

I'm sure the Natives had fun stuff to smoke in their pipes, but it probably wasn't Mary Jane, Ganja, or Panama Red.
