  • Obsidian Beads for Doug

    Doug,

I saw your cruciform post and it reminded me of these beads and worked obsidian items from father south in Mexico.

Here are a couple of old pictures of the drilled obsidian beads and a couple of small effigies that are typically found with the cruciform artifacts in Western Mexico and Central Mexico. The bat effigy is pretty common, and the other is likely sea turtle effigy. Some of the beads have a heavy polish, not quite as smooth as many of your cruciforms. I didn't get any of the cruciform ones, they aren't nearly as common as these.

Josh is there a culture or age in relation to these? Thanks for sharing, had no idea that pieces like this exist.

In West Mexico it's the groups that made pottery dogs and figurines. (Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit.) And in Central Mexico they are found around Teotihuacan.

500 BC to 500 AD or so. So basically Adena to Hopewell in age.

I have heard that in certain parts of Mexico artifacts beyond projectile points are as findable as points are in Texas…

Really nice beads Joshua, I've never seen or heard of beads made from Obsidian. With all the Obsidian in the western Great Basin, you'd think they would have made there here too.
