  • Childs Axe ???

These Axes look very much like net weights but are NOT. First off net weights are made very quickly with one or two wack's on both sides. These took some work to make the notches. They are much deeper then weights. All three have been ground to an edge yet they are not as sharp most axes. These very well may not be child's axes but they are relatively similar to small axes. their use is unknown to me. I call them Child's Axes for lack of another term. If anyone has found one or more of these please show them and reply with your thoughts. Kim

We can only speculate on its intended use.
      a axe? I think not.
with the lack of polish/ use wear it doesn’t look used.
A childs toy? Perhaps I think that material would be best used in other ways.
my opinion is it’s to thin for a axe.
      net weight or hoe… maybe……?

Hey Kim I agree with you that I don’t think your examples are net weights The worked notches, the sharpened edges and the fact that they are pretty thin to be used to weigh down a net. They don’t look suitable for chopping wood but perhaps a fighting weapon. I do have several net weights with smooth worked notches but none that show signs of sharpening.

There was a post on this site, can’t remember which topic or how long ago, but somebody posted some pictures of net weights that looked very much like this one, and mentioned several they found had a beveled edge. I remember there being some discussion about how them being used as a hafted tool was controversial, since they were often smaller than known axes. But it always made sense to me, since you can buy modern axes in every size down to miniature hatchets and they all have a valid, non-toy purpose.

if anybody remembers that topic and can post a link, I think it contains some photos of this item’s twins.

They get the tapered edge from dragging on the river/creek bottoms imo...

Not these Jon. the edge work is very intentional. K

These were found up on the beach and had not made it to the water.

I have seen many well made notched weights, with deep notching. But, most that I find are just battered on opposite sides, just enough to grip lashings. But, certainly I have seen many well made notched weights. So such weights are indeed deeply notched at times….

I agree CMD. I have found well over 300 weights but these three are different from all those I've found
