I was digging for a pond in Schenectady Co. NY. On some land that was just empty and never had been as I am aware build on. Lots of CLAY around and some shale but mostly clay.
TONS of large rocks etc. here are some more pictures
Looks like you need a visit to a major library in your area and some consultation with old maps. If you're finding tons of rocks like this then there must for sure have been something constructed in this area. Six feet down is not necessarily an indication of great antiquity... especially not in clay soils and also not if those stones represent the foundation for something.
