I forget where I got this one LOL Colorado/Utah?? When I was a youngster in NJ there were garnets in schist in a lot of places and some were good size, some real nice quality..but most were small and cruddy. There were so many I didn't collect them!!

Yes they do polish up beautifully. I worked with a guy who hunted rubies out in the VA Piedmont and he made some stunning jewelry.
