  • Iowa Finds Along The Cedar River

I found all of these along the Cedar River in Linn Co., Iowa. I'm thinking they're pisolitic limestone, pyrite nodules and a few geodic fragments. One looks to be 'oolitic' and the other 'botryoidal' (maybe chalcedony)...at least by some definitions and pictures I've seen. The pisolitic limestone (if that's what I have here) consists of calcite and forms concentrically. You can see the layers on some of the nodules. If you know otherwise, let me know. Overall, nothing special but I think they're cool looking. Thanks for looking.

    Very Cool!
If the women don\'t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Thanks, Olden. I like the Red Green quote, by the way.

Thanks, Tam. I "think" it's pisolitic limestone, as I mentioned earlier, but I'm no authority. I read somewhere that 'piso' is Greek for 'peas'.

Thanks, Benji. As far as I know, it's an iron pyrite nodule in matrix.

I'm pretty sure that the first one has a micro effigy in it, of either Santa or Guy Fawkes

Thanks, MondoLithic. You know, I think you're right...maybe even Fred Gwynne. I have a lot of rocks that are good cases for pareidolia.
