  • Hematite?

Heavy for it’s size and when I was drying it off after cleaning it left red on paper towel

Is it heavy?...it seems to me it’s gotta be either that or ochre type stuff...

Hematite plentiful where I dig. It streaks brown, or some variation thereof. Run it along the inside of your toilet tank lid; if streaks brown, you prolly got hematite! (The fact that left red on paper towel tells you minimally got some iron in it!)

Digging in GA, ‘bout a mile from the Savannah River

Could also be limonite which is softer than hematite. Most hematite needs a little bit harder of a surface than a paper towel to bleed red.

But if it came from a site it very well could have been use for ochre.
