  • Fired clay tools ?

I came across this near a muddy over flow area where a river runs. Did research about fired clay artifacts but wondering if this is true finds.

Most look like chips off of old bricks. Only two look like artifacts, but I could be wrong. When I go brick hunting (yes, that's a thing) I find those all the time, so that's what I think they are.

I have some other pieces I will post. Look like points and scrapers. Just that the pieces resemble a lot of what I see made from flaked stone. Thanks for reply.

Just a thought. I searched size of red bricks. Most red bricks are 8 inches long. This piece I have is a little over 8 1/2 inches.also width of most bricks are 3 5/8. This is 3 7/8 and could have been 4 inches and about 2 3/8 tall maybe more because of chipped away. The weight of this piece I have is very light. Bricks are heavy. Has anyone ever seen red color artifacts that could possibly be what I have. The pictures don't do justice but will have them looked at from someone.thanks for your replys.

Yes there is Roman sizes. 8 inch is the longest. Next is 9 5/8. I did look on this site also. The size I have doesn't match up to any. That is why I am confused. I'm not saying it is ochre but its was an option. I first said clay and going by the shapes they resemble other artifacts. You can't judge by a picture and I can't say for sure what it is . thanks for your input.

You're thinking purely brick length & width. If broken off diagonally, it would be longer. Handmade bricks often varied in size. As old bricks have deteriorated by the elements, material leaches out and the flakes that remain can be quite porous & light. Eventually it crumbles & returns to the soil.
The guys are right in calling it brick. Sorry...

I just checked out all the photos, yup. Old dried out fire damaged brick chunks. Btw, fire damaged brick dries out and becomes flakey and crumbly and light. And if you still not convinced then what kind of artifacts do you think they could possibly be having been made out of an apparently terrible stone?

I do not know where you got your information but Roman brick is 11.5 inches long . Below are specific brick sizes. This probaby does not matter to you but I just stuccoed over my chimney, if I had not done this work yet I would have put a dang ruler next to the roman brick that I covered.

                              Standard Brick 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 8"
                              Modular Brick 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 7 1/2"
                              Norman Brick 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 11 1/2"
                              Roman Brick 3 1/2" x 1 1/2 "x 11 1/2"
