  • Found this item in a Catawba River Indian campsite

    Hello to all again!
Anybody have any idea what type of material stone this is?
I wonder if some of it was possibly used to make something.
I found this item in a Catawba River Indian campsite last occupied in the 1500's.
It has swirled coloring and looks to have been cut on.
Also has some type of copper coloring on surface which you will see in my 4th photo.
Your answers and comments are always appreciated.

    Hi Chief,
It looks like a fairly soft sedimentary rock. The copper color is the oldest exposed surface, but it appears that the rock broke in pieces at some point, by plow or nature. It does not appear to be altered by man. The material is not a good choice for tools at all.

I agree with Cliff. It looks entirely natural to me.

        Give it a chance!

I just had to throw this in.

It is a "Rock" when it's on the ground.
It is a "Specimen" when picked up and taken home.

Cliff nailed it Chief. You found an incomplete form of Schist which is nothing more than morphosed, scilicified mud except on yours, the metaphormic processes haven't finished.
I'll bet it is still fairly soft and would crumble if you tried to knap it.
